Summary:
The Diamond Willow Amethyst Mine is one of many that pop up on billboards as you head about an hour East of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
This mine provides buckets and small tools. The mine allowed me to bring my own hammer and chisel, but asks that you check with them about your tools first. They had tools on site to use as well.
When you’re here, try striking rocks along their quartz seams to get clean breaks. Dirt piles may also contain amethyst as well if you move enough tailings. You’ll see a large fence above the machinery in the vein where the amethyst itself comes from.
You can get to this area with any vehicle, even though it’s a dirt road to get in.
Note: This is a paid dig site. Their website contains most accurate information and can be found here.

An example of using a hammer and chisel along the quartz veins in these smaller boulders.
There were quite a few of these flat sheets of amethyst. If you can break the matrix (surrounding rock) off them cleanly, they make nice displays.
An example of a large brecciated boulder. They have a water and brush area to do some cleanup before you go.
There are large 'boulder-style' pieces up for sale near the gift shop by the parking area of the property.
The Sleeping Giant - a nearby rock formation that overlooks Lake Superior's Northern shores. If you enjoy a long hike, the 13.9 mile "Top of the Giant" trail was very worthwhile especially in Autumn.
