FAQ

How did the project begin?

About 5 years ago, my grandpa gave me his old Mercury SUV. I turned it into a makeshift truck camper to go rockhounding and got into making YouTube videos. In most of them, I tried to give a rundown on the locations I was at. This website is my attempt at turning that into something that people can use to get into rockhounding more easily.

Okay, but why isn’t there a location in each state?

In the era of “AI-everything”, I wanted the writing to be a first-person journal of all the places I’ve visited. Complete with fragmented sentences and imperfect photography. This takes time, effort, and a LOT of driving. You’ll see there’s work to be done, but I hope to be at this for a while. Stay tuned!

Who is this website for?

Everyone! There are locations listed where you can get out of your car just off the highway and find crystals. Others will take you to the dustiest corners of the Arizona desert.

How do you know where public and private land end?

I am not affiliated with either of these, but I will point you towards Gaia GPS or onX. These are the two most popular land map apps. I double-check that all of the GPS coordinates listed are on public land, but status of these places may change over time.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to ensure you remain on land you’re allowed to be on. Treat the listed coordinates as a good starting point.

Have a spot you’d like me to visit?

Get in touch with my email at thirdplanetrocks@gmail.com. Please let me know if it’s something you’re comfortable with me including on the website, or if it’s a place you’d rather keep private.
