FAQ

How did the project begin?

About 5 years ago, my grandparents gave me their old Mercury SUV. I turned it into a makeshift truck camper to go rockhounding and got into making YouTube videos. This website is my attempt at creating something for everyone from lifelong rockhounds to a family looking for a fun way to spend a Saturday.

Okay, but why isn’t there a location in each state?

In the era of “AI-everything”, I wanted the writing to be a first-person journal of all the places I’ve visited. There have been at least 70,000 miles of solo driving to make the website so far. All the writing is my own, without the use of AI. In other words… it’s a time consuming project! My hope is to slowly make improvements over a long period of time.

What’s the password for the map?

The password for the map is found in the Patreon group, which is 100% free. The latest version of the map will always be a pinned post on Patreon. This was recently changed from a login/password system here on the website to make things smoother.

How do you know where public and private land end?

I am not affiliated with either of these, but I will point you towards Gaia GPS or onX. These are the two most popular land map apps. I double-check that all of the GPS coordinates listed are on public land, but status of these places may change over time.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility to ensure you remain on land you’re allowed to be on. Treat the listed coordinates as a good starting point.

Have a spot you’d like me to visit?

Send me an email: rockhoundingmap@gmail.com

Please let me know if it’s something you’re comfortable with me including on the website, or if it’s a place you’d rather keep private.
