Beaver River

Minnesota

Find: Lake Superior Agates, amygdaloidal basalt, epidote, granites, and a wider variety of color than you’d see down by Duluth.

GPS: 47.26019, -91.29358

Nearest city: Duluth, MN

Recommended. Vehicle: Any

Summary:

Note: This is one of the few private properties I have listed. Someone owns the path between Highway 61 and the rock beach, and has generously allowed the public to use it to access the water.

I thought it was pretty cool. You should see a little sign after the bridge if you’re heading North. (I last visited in Autumn of 2022)

The water was very clear here and offered a colorful variety of stones, similar almost to what you’d find in Michigan rather than Minnesota’s shore.

Please do not access through here if the sign is no longer present!

3 Helpful Tools

Chest Waders

Chest waders were the single best investment I made for exploring the shores of Lake Superior.

Agate Scoop

An agate scoop is helpful for both keeping dry and picking up rocks faster. You don’t need a fancy one. Mine is a golf club welded to a kitchen scoop.

Classifier

A classifier is helpful if you’re a fan of small agates and stones. One with a larger, 1-inch mesh would be what I’d pick.
