There is no entry fee. The most recently posted rates online are $2/lb, or a 1 gallon bucket for $20, 2 gallon for $40, and 5 gallon for $100. Payments are made via Venmo. There is a sign onsite with Venmo information and current rates.
Description:
Selenite is the crystalline form of gypsum. The selenite at the Glitter Mountain claim was deposited when a large basin covered the Utah/Arizona border. (The claim is accessed through St George, Utah rather than Arizona). There is a virtually endless amount of material to be found surface collecting and you won’t need to dig at all.
The claim owner asks visitors not to dig in the open pit or to use large tools to take big pieces.
The claim puts on occasional “big digs” which you can find information about on their facebook page (linked below).
Seasonality:
This site is open year-round, but there is no shade in the Summer months and temps routinely exceed 100F.
Road condition notes:
The roads to the site are dirt and may wash out after rains. The roads are reportedly in decent shape and people have made it there to dig in vehicles such as minivans, but conditions can change over time.
